Unscrew the valve nut until it stops, then attach the pump firmly and inflate. If the valve seems stuck, briefly press the valve tip to make sure it opens. Screw the valve nut back down. Common mistake: forgetting to unscrew the valve nut. The valve tip cannot open properly, so the pump may appear not to work.

Remove the cap. Attach the pump securely and inflate. Replace the cap. Simple, but don't skip the cap: it helps keep dirt and water away from the valve core.

Can You Switch Between Types?

You generally can’t change a tube’s valve type, but you can adapt your setup:

Presta tube in a Schrader rim: Yes, but use a properly sized valve-hole reducer or grommet to secure the narrower valve in the larger rim hole.

Schrader tube in a Presta rim: No. The Schrader valve is too wide for a standard Presta rim hole. Do not enlarge the rim hole unless the rim manufacturer specifically permits it.
